The co-op

A co-op is a school the families build together

A grown-up reads a picture book to a small group of children seated on a rug

Who does what

At Bosque, the teachers lead the teaching. The families do the rest: they help in the classroom, look after the garden, prepare snack and decide together how the year goes. So there are family adults working beside the teachers every morning.

  • A duty morning every two weeks

  • One job for the year

  • One family meeting a month

The co-op jobs

Each family chooses a job when they enroll. It can change at the start of each session.

  • Garden

Waters, plants with the children and looks after the desert plants in the yard.

  • Water and shade

Fills the bottles and the water stations, and moves the shade cloths through the year.

  • Snack

Organizes the week's snack list and the shopping.

  • Materials

Gathers paper, paint and natural materials for the workshops.

  • Repairs and cleanup

Fixes what breaks in the yard and coordinates the end-of-month cleanup.

  • Messages

Sends notices to families and reminds everyone of the month's meetings.

A duty morning, step by step

  1. 01

Step 1: 8:00 a.m. · Arrive and talk with the teacher

The teacher tells you your job for the morning: snack, the garden or walking with the group.

  2. 02

    Step 2: 8:30 a.m. · Greet the children

Welcome families at the yard gate and help each child find their place in the circle.

  3. 03

Step 3: 9:00 a.m. · Walk with the group outside

You work beside a teacher; you are not left in charge of a group on your own.

  4. 04

    Step 4: 10:00 a.m. · Serve snack

Hand out water and snack at the table in the shade.

  5. 05

Step 5: 12:30 p.m. · Tidy up and say goodbye

Help put the yard away and talk with the teacher about the morning. Your day ends at 12:45 p.m.

If a family can't do a duty, they tell us and we look for another way to help, such as a job that can be done from home.

We explain how it works for your family, with your child's age and the mornings that suit you.
